Quem disse que a vida de estudante universitário era fácil
estava muito enganado. Levantar cedo, trabalhos de grupo, apresentações, exames
muito dolorosos que geram muita ansiedade, uma grande lista de cadeiras, apontamentos
de quase 60 páginas, competitividade em geral, etc. São realmente muitas coisas
ao mesmo tempo e temos de estar sempre a par de tudo. No entanto, quando a
Licenciatura acaba, pensa-se: continuo ou não?
Bom, eu vou-vos falar acerca da minha história. Eu estou a
acabar a Licenciatura em Psicologia e, por isso, para poder exercer uma
actividade como psicóloga, tenho mesmo de ter o Mestrado no meu currículo. No
entanto, e porque percebi que há coisas tão mais importantes como estar ao lado
de quem amamos, decidi que não iria fazer a minha formação toda em Portugal
quando tenho um mundo inteiro para descobrir. Não me fazia qualquer sentido
ficar num país que não me entusiasma profissionalmente e sabendo que o mestrado
normalmente nos introduz ao mercado de trabalho, gostei mais da ideia de ir
para fora do que ficar aqui.
E perguntam vocês: como? O processo é longo, essa é a
primeira coisa a saber. Quando andava no 2.º Ano da Licenciatura, comecei a pesquisar mestrados na
Holanda, porque foi o país que me acolheu e é feito de gente feliz e
descomplicada. Até descobrir um mestrado que me agradasse demorou algum tempo.
Fui contactando várias universidades (Amesterdão, Roterdão, Utrecht, Maastricht...) e até hoje tenho mais de 100 mails enviados para
a minha querida Tessa da Erasmus University Rotterdam. Foi essa mesma que escolhi e
tenho mantendo o contacto desde então. Escolhi pelo bom mestrado que tem e
também pela óptima localização. Depois, foi esperar para que me pudesse
inscrever.
As condições de acesso são sempre algo a considerar. A maior
parte dos mestrados lá fora requerem um teste de inglês, como o TOEFL ou o IELTS,
que foi o que fiz e o que recomendo. É um teste fácil para quem consegue ter uma conversa básica
em inglês por isso não tenham medo. Sempre podem frequentar alguns cursos que o
British Council dispõe para irem melhor preparados. Outras coisas que costumam
pedir é o vosso currículo, cartas de recomendação (que pedem a um professor) e
motivação, a vossa experiência na universidade relativamente a formação
específica, alguns até requerem entrevistas. Mas não se assustem! Se realmente
quiserem, de certeza que irão conseguir.
Depois de terem tudo o que precisam, é só inscreverem-se e
esperarem pelo resultado como eu fiz! Não tenham medo. Eu fiz tudo sempre com
duas vozinhas de cada lado, uma a dizer-me que iria conseguir e outra a pensar
que seria só um sonho. Não foi! É mesmo a realidade. Para além disto, podem
sempre tentar concorrer a bolsas para ajudar nos custos. Estudar fora também nem
sempre é tão caro como podem imaginar.
Uma das dicas que vos dou é tenham em
conta sempre a Universidade, o país que escolhem consoante a área que querem,
os quartos que irão alugar caso não tenham nenhum familiar naquele país, o
clima, a linguagem, as pessoas… Tudo!

The one who said the university life was easy is completely wrong. Getting up early, group projects, presentations, really difficult exams that make you super anxious, a long list of subjects, summaries of almost 60 pages each, a lot of competitive people, etc. It is a lot of things at once and we really have to know it all. But, when the Bachelor ends, we think: do I continue or not?
Well, I'm gonna tell you about my story. I am currently finishing my Bachelor in Psychology and, therefore, to be a psychologist, I need the Master in my CV. However, and because I realised there is a lot more important things in life like being there for the ones we love, I decided that I wasn't going to study in Portugal anymore after my Bachelor if I have the entire world to see. It didn't make any sense to stay in a country that doesn't really excites me professionally, and knowing the master usually introduces us to a new job, I liked the idea of going abroad more than staying here.
And now you ask: how? Well, it is a long process, that's the first thing you should know. When I was in the 2nd year of my Bachelor, I started looking for masters in Holland, because it became the country who I loved the most and made of happy and uncomplicated people. Till I found a master that excited me it took me a little bit. I contacted different Universities (Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Utrecht, Maastricht...) and until today I have more than 100 e-mails sent to my dear Tessa of the Erasmus University Rotterdam. It was this one I chose and I have been keeping the contact ever since. I chose it because of the great master plan and because of the amazing location. So then, all I had to do was sit and wait till I could apply.
The admission requirements are always something you have to consider. The major masters abroad always require an English proof exam, like TOEFL or IELTS, which was the one I did and the one I recommend. It is an easy exam for people who can have a basic conversation in English so don't be afraid! You can always go to the courses that the British Council offers so you feel more confident and get ready for it the better way. Other requirements they usually ask for is your CV, recommendation letters (which you can ask to your teacher) and motivation letters, your experience in the current University relatively to a specific training, some even ask for interviews. But don't get scared! If you really want, I'm sure you'll be admitted to the program.
After you have everything you need to apply, you just have to do it and wait for the results to come back like I did! Do not be afraid. I always did it with two voices on each side: one telling me I would be able to study abroad and other thinking it would be just a dream. It wasn't! It's the reality. By the way, you can also apply for a scholarship to help you paying the costs. Studying abroad doesn't always have to be as expensive as you may think.
One of the tips I can give you is always consider the University you're applying for, the country you choose, the available rooms if you don't have anyone living in that country, the weather, the language, the people... Everything! And never be afraid of contacting the University you want, because they're the best help you can get.
